About feeds
Perhaps you’ve seen the feed (aka RSS) icon at left and you’re wondering what it’s all about. Well, instead of giving you a long, confusing explanation, I’m going to share a quick video with you instead.
How do I use a feed?
You have a couple of options. First, if you like email and don’t want to add any more software to your life, you can subscribe via email. What that means is that you’ll receive an email when there’s a new post on the blog/site you’ve subscribed to. It’s an easy way to stay informed without having to remember to check back.
Many blogs offer the “subscribe via email” option, often as a little form on the side. You can subscribe to this blog via email at the top fof this page. If you don’t see a form like this, you can use the FeedBlitz service to subscribe to any blog via email.
Secondly, you can use a program or website called a “feed reader.” There are a huge number of different feed readers to choose from, most of which are free. You can use one that’s “web-based,” meaning that you visit the feed reader site to see all of your latest information. This is very handy if you use more than one computer or just don’t want to install anything new. The service may even be part of a site you already use (like My Yahoo!).
I personally use and recommend Google Reader.
Once you’re set up with your feed reader of choice, you can click on the RSS icon (it often shows up in your browser’s address bar or on the side of a blog) and subscribe to that feed. If there is an interim page with instructions, it will walk you through the process of subscribing to the feed. If you’re using a feed reader that isn’t shown, you can copy the feed address (find it in your web browser’s address bar after you click the feed link) and add the new feed to your reader.
