I tried updating the permalink and received the messahe .htaccess needs updating. Any suggestions would be helful.
Sarah, I’m new to WordPress coming off a 2 year blogging hiatus (Movable Type). I’ve installed WordPress 2.3 and my host has a Windows server. Everything so far has gone well, including the integration of Gallery2 and the WPG plug-in, with the exception of one issue.
I have no operational Permalinks! I can create posts and pages on the WP admin control panel but everytime I try to link to them from my homepage, I get error 404: File not found.
Since I’m using a IIS system, I have no .htaccess file to manipulate. From the digging I’ve done to date, it appears my best option is to utilize a plug-in such as http://www.binaryfortress.com/wordpress-url-rewrite/
I’m working with my host to see if they have the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable installed and if I as a client can make the suggested hacks to the php.ini file.
I’m interested to hear any suggestions you have on this critically necessary function my site currently lacks. If my host can’t support the use of the Binary Fortress plug-in, are there any other alternatives I can explore other than manually creating pages and uploading them to \blog\directory (yuck!)
Thank you for the videos! By far the most informative resource for beginners I’ve been able to find.
Cheers, Paul
Is this supposed to have sound — i couldn’t hear it.
Hi, Jeff—yes, this video has sound. I haven’t had any other reports of it not working, but would you mind telling me what browser and operating system you’re using? That can help me track down weird issues.
Your videos are so helpful. Many thanks.
If I didn’t install Wordpresss in the root directory but chose blog instead, how can I now put it in the root directory instead?
Thanks
Lynne Lee
